  1. A set first, then singles

    A 6- to 21-piece set covers the first two years. After that you replace the two tools you actually use with better singles, not the whole roll.

  2. Concave cutters are the one that matters

    A concave cutter leaves a wound that heals flat. Straight snips leave a stub. If one tool gets upgraded, it is this one.

  3. Wire is sized, not general-purpose

    Aluminium training wire is sold by gauge. Anodised wire is easier to see against bark. Match the gauge to the branch, not to the tree.
